OVERVIEW OF THE WEBSPHERE MIGRATION PROCESS

The WebSphere migration process begins with a project planning meeting where we discuss
the goals of the migration, the roles of each individual and milestone dates.

Next, We overview of the Software Development Process to be performed during the migration
process. This is a modified version of the Rational Unified Process that has evolved over
many WebSphere / J2EE projects. It is a fusion of the best features of RUP and best practices
developed throughout many projects. The process is streamlined and simplified since this is
WebSphere version-to-version migration or a conversion of an existing application from one
Application Server or Legacy System to WebSphere and we are not creating the application
from the beginning.

The migration process will begin with the Inception Phase, during which we will perform a
detailed Migration Assessment to plan the migration effort. The Assessment will document the
work to be performed and include a detailed project plan for carrying out the conversion
process. During the Inception Phase we will also create a Test Plan. The delivery team performs
projects with an intensive focus on risk identification and mitigation. We will identify the risks
and plan for their mitigation during the Inception Phase.
There will be a short Elaboration Phase where any remaining design work that is required to
support the migration effort will be performed. The bulk of the conversion work will occur in
the Construction Phase.

The project will be performed as a series of iterations – each about two weeks in length. At
the end of each iteration, we will deliver a subset of the functionality working on the
WebSphere 4.0 or 5.0 (when available). We will perform integration testing during each
iteration and will execute performance testing at select points over the length of the project.
